2011 will be another big year for the PlayStation 3, with over 20 exclusive titles heading to the console. Nearly every major PlayStation series will be making an appearance, include a guest appearance from Kratos in the new Mortal Kombat title. It’s only been a few days since the PS3 ‘root key’ was discovered and already a Custom Firmware has been created by homebrew developer KaKaRoTo. Naturally, due to legal issues, the developer has refrained from releasing the firmware to the public but has made available all the tools needed to create your own custom firmware (providing you have some coding knowledge).
GeoHot is at it again! The PlayStation 3’s “Root Key” was discovered by a group of hackers last week and has been published by famed hacker GeoHot. The root key allows PS3 users to run homebrew applications without the need for dongles and devices like the PS3 Jailbreak.
The 360GB PS3 system has only been available as a bundle package, which includes the PlayStation Move controller, PlayStation Eye and a copy of Sports Champions for £399.99 (MRSP). Soon, the 360GB PS3 will be available as stand-alone console for a cheaper price of $349.99.
Back at E3, Sony revealed an all-in-one Surround Sound System for the PS3 with built-in subwoofer. The device will be available to purchase next week in the U.S. and Canada. You’ll be able to enjoy immersive audio by simply placing the Surround Sound System in front of the television and connecting it to the PS3 system with the optical digital cable.
Earlier this week, Sony announced their financial and figures from the first quarter of the fiscal year – with the fiscal year ending on March 31st 2011. The figures indicate the company has made an operating income of $753 million with a net income of $289 million.
Sony revealed a special surround sound system for the PlayStation 3 at E3 last month, and SCEJ has now officially dated the system. The surround sound system will be released on September 3oth 2010 and will have a price tag of ¥19,800 (around $199 / £150).
A new exploit in the PS3 System Software has been found. The new exploit makes use of a vulnerability in the XMB theme feature, allowing a price of code to be executed after a theme has been installed. The PS3 theme file is able to load the loadme.fu script from any USB port.
The Guinness book of World Records but also produces an annually Gamer’s Edition; a records book devoted games and gaming-related achievements (high scores, etc). This year’s edition recognizes a trio of PlayStation milestones, for three exclusive PlayStation titles.
The US PlayStation Website suggests that new hardware will be revealed at E3 this week. The website states, “The E3 expo is coming! Meet us here to find out what awesome PlayStation games and hardware are being revealed.” In addition, CVG has learned that Sony is set to reveal two new PS3 SKUs this week which will come bundled with the Move motion controller.
