PlayStation 3 Firmware v2.53 is now available to download using the Network Update feature on the console. You will be prompted to update your system (if you haven’t already done so) when you boot up your PS3. The new system software version improves the Flash Player in the [Internet Browser] to support full screen viewing and also adds Live movie playability (using RTMP format). What does this mean? You can now enjoy YouTube and BBC iPlayer videos in full screen on your HD (or SD) TV.
The new update brings the PlayStation 3 slightly closer to becoming the ultimate multimedia device. Of course, there are still plenty of features Sony can add, such as better video format support, subtitle support (.srt files) and the PlayStation Video Store for other regions (currently only available in the US).
The BBC iPlayer is now compatible with the PlayStation 3 Internet Browser so you can enjoy all your favourite BBC shows on your HDTV. The BBC iPlayer service provides a video-on-demand service allowing you watch programs up to seven days after they broadcast on live TV. You can access the iPlayer by visiting the iPlayer Website on your PS3. Of course, you must live within the United Kingdom in order to use the BBC iPlayer. The PS3 compatible iPlayer was announced back in October this year, and has been available on the Wii for some time now.
With the new features in Firmware Update v2.53, you will also be able to enjoy the iPlayer videos in full screen. If you already own the PlayTV device in the UK, this service is a bonus to the BBC channels you already receive.

The PlayStation 3 will be getting a firmware update soon, bringing the system software version to v2.53. The minor update will support for full screen flash content. According to several websites the update was supposed to be released on November 26th, but so far the update is no where to be found. We speculate that Sony may have found a bug (or two) just before public release. Sony has not made a official announcement regarding the update but we can expect one close to the release date.
Some websites claim that the update was announced on the US PlayStation 3 Website but we have failed to find any such announcement. The announcement could have been on the website but pulled after delays in releasing the update. For now, keep a look out for an official announcement.
If you happen to live in Europe and own the PlayTV accessory, you will be happy to know that a update for the PlayTV software has been released. The update, which is 19MB in size, improves the loading time of the Electronic Program Guide (or EPG) as well as improve the recording functionality. An official changelog was not released by SCEE so we are not sure if anything else was changed or added. In order to update your software, launch PlayTV and go to the Settings menu. Select "About" and click on the "Check for Update" button.
PlayTV is only available in a selected countries in Europe including the UK, France and Spain. PlayTV allows you to watch Live TV on your PlayStation 3 as well as record programs directly to the internal hard disk. You can also record from one channel while watching another, and you can pause live TV.
If you use Linux on your PlayStation 3 console, you will know that Yellow Dog Linux is one of a few Operating Systems that support the console. YDL has been updated to v6.1 providing new software packages and security updates to the Operating System. One of the most siginificant addition to the update is the use of the PS3 Video RAM. YDL now uses the 256MB of VRAM as main memory for temporary file storage and swap space. The update also updates the kernel, the Cell SDK, and Wireless configurations, among other changes.
The new version is currently available to YDL Enhanced Members only, but you can expect general public release in a few weeks time.
Changelog:
The Eye of Judgment is a unique combination of strategy card game and battle, played out with real cards and the use of the next-gen EyeToy camera.
Another huge PlayStation Store update this week with lots of new game add-on content for several titles, including LittleBigPlanet, Rock Band, Guitar Hero and BioShock. Another set of Sackboy costumes are now available to download and the BioShock Challenge Rooms add-on is now available for purchase. This week’s update also included some new game videos, themes and other content. No new demos for Europe but the US has received the MotoGP 2008 demo. Check out the complete list below.
