On August 31, 2005, a PlayStation 2 disc arrived with the faces of that summer’s World Series professionals rendered on it, and the pitch was that a player at home could sit across from them. Activision built the game around the 2005 tournament and shipped it on PS2 and Xbox first, with a PlayStation Portable version on September 15. That disc was not the first of its kind on the console, but it set the template every later release either copied or rejected. Twenty-one years on, almost nothing about it survives except the rules.
