How do I update the firmware on the PS3?

You can update the firmware/system software in two main ways: using Wired/Wireless Internet or using an external storage media. If you have internet configured, the PS3 can download and install the update for you. If the PS3 is not connected to the internet, a USB device can be used to install the update.

If you use a USB device, the “PS3UPDAT.PUP” file should be stored in the folder “/PS3/UPDATE”, i.e. there should be a folder called “PS3” on the root of the device. Within the PS3 folder, there should be another folder called “UPDATE” which should contain the “PS3UPDAT.PUP” file.

Warning: Do not switch off your PS3 or remove the external storage media during an update. Doing so may damage the system software, rendering your PS3 useless. You should use the Recovery Menu if your PS3 fails to start correctly.

Can I convert my own movies and play them on the PSP?

Yes, there are many programs available that will convert video files to a PSP compatible format. Playback time depends on which version of the memory stick you have (32 MB, 128 MB, 256 MB, 512 MB, 1 GB) and the bitrate that you encode the movie (the higher the bit rate, the better quality the movie). How do I change my PlayStation Network Username?

You cannot officially change your PSN username. You can, however, delete your User on the PS3, create a new user and register with the PlayStation Network using a different name. Any save data on the old PS3 username will be deleted when you delete the account.

I cannot save bookmarks on my browser!

To be able to save bookmarks, you must have the “SYSTEM” folder in your “PSP” folder. A quick way to correct this is to format your Memory Card, but remember to backup your data first!

Why does my Internet Browser display a low memory error?

Your browser will display a low memory error if your cache is full. To disable this error, simply disable the use of your cache by changing the settings. The disadvantage is that each page will need to be loaded as it will not be stored locally.

You can increase the size of your cache, but in the end, it will cause the same problem. For the time being, it is best to disable cache. Hopefully Sony will release a fix for this error!

If the error persists, you can manually empty the cache. The error normally occurs when you try to load a large page or image.

Firmware 3.10+

On Firmware 3.10 and greater, you can enable the [Conserve Memory] option from the[View Settings] menu to prevent the Low Memory Error from occuring. The [Conserve Memory] option enables you to view a Web page that contains a larger amount of data because less memory is used to display the page.

How does the XMB display content?

Each option on the XMB (Photos, Music, Videos) can only display files located on a specific folder of a storage media (HDD, USB Flash Disk, Memory Card etc). If you are using a external data store, you must create the following folders on the root of the drive:

PICTURE – for image files
MUSIC – for audio files
VIDEO – for video files

The format utility (found under Settings > System Settings > Format Utility) can create the necessary files on the external storage media, but will erase any existing data.

What happens if the battery dies or I need to turn the PSP off?

The PSP has a hibernate mode, which saves your exact position when you turn off the console. When you turn on the console, you will be in the exact same position, whether in the PSP system menus, or actually playing a game.

If your battery dies, all unsaved data will be lost. If the green power LED on your PSP is flashing, it is best to save your game, as this indicates low battery.

To hibernate your PSP, simply push the power switch up for no more than 1 second. To turn off your PSP completely, hold the power switch up for 3 seconds.

How do I check battery life while playing a game?

Press the “HOME” button during any game. A menu will come up asking if you want to return to the system menu. On the top right corner is the battery indicator along with the date and time. The power indicator light will blink when the battery is running low.
