As of PS5 Firmware v21.02-04.00.00, the internal M.2 SSD expansion slot can be used to expand the storage of your console with up to 4 TB of additional space. There are a number of PS5-compatible M.2 drives available (links below), and they only take a few minutes to install.

Supported M.2 SSD Drives

Here is a list of just some of the PS5-compatible M.2 drives currently available on Amazon.

  • Samsung 980 PRO SSD with Heatsink 2TB
  • WD_Black SN850X 1TB M.2 2280
  • WD_Black SN850X 2TB M.2 2280
  • WD_Black SN850 1TB (Officially Licensed for PS5)
  • WD_Black SN850 2TB (Officially Licensed for PS5)
  • Corsair MP600 PRO LPX 1TB

Installing a M.2 SSD

The below video from PlayStation Support shows how easy it is to install a M.2 drive into the PS5. We recommend watching this video carefully before attempting to install your own drive.

Using the PS5 M.2 SSD

Once your new M.2 SSD is installed, the PS5 will pick it up automatically and ask you to format it for first use. Once formatted, you’ll see the SSD under [Settings] > [Storage] and you’ll be able to use the drive to install new games or move existing games across. We’ve put together a handy video to show you this process.
