Game Engines: The Power Behind Game Innovation

PlayStation has been an instrumental player in the evolution of gaming in the past years. Along with its competitors the console market has brought quality games into people’s home and have cemented themselves as an essential part of the home entertainment system. This has been great for gamers but it has also been advantage goes for game developers who can gain markets for their games through consoles such as PlayStations.

Development of games is something that players rarely think about except when they hope a game could be changed to add or remove features. This is quite normal as the intricacies behind game development can be rather complicated and too complex for the ordinary player. Games however have people behind them who see them through from concept to release.

A lot of these games are mostly created by computer programmers who use computer code to bring their ideas to reality. The most widely used type of platforms for creating games are what is known as game engines.

World Builders

Game engines are a sort of a software environment that allows users to modify it with additional code. These frameworks provide creatives and developers the tools for constructing games that people love from relaxing games such as Bubble Shooter and Tetris to composite worlds like Need for Speed and Fortnite.

Sony has its own game engine  which allows developers to make games that are compatible with various PlayStation consoles. This software framework called PhyreEngine has been used to develop some notable games such as Mars: War Logs and Dragon Quest Builders. The idea behind such engines is to deliver an opportunity for independent game developers to pursue their projects with as much ease as it is possible.

How they Operate

There are many different game engines in existence and each one will have its unique offering and capabilities. This also applies to how separate engines have different terms for the use of the software and so will differ in their approach towards developers. One of the most popular game engines called Unity Engine requires a monthly or yearly paid subscription that goes into the thousands and is somewhat costly for a lot of people but offers features and support that is hard to beat.

Another well respected engine is Unreal Engine and it too is a powerful software structure for creating epic content. This engine can be downloaded, installed and used for free but will require an account to be created with the vendor. The proceeds from completed projects are also royalty free until revenue reaches 1 million US dollars at which point a 5% royalty fee is paid to the engine providers.

Sony’s PhyreEngine operates differently as it provides licenses for the free use of the software. This makes the engine less available to the general public as the licensing process seems to be cumbersome and applying for one does not guarantee access to the software. The engine is also limited to certain areas of the globe and cannot be used as widely as other engines are capable of doing.

Game Innovation

Game engines play an important role in the innovation of games as they open the door for many people with diverse ideas to produce a colourful array choice for players from around the world.

They help in the creation of gaming communities where tools and knowledge are shared in order to simplify the art of game development.
