Sony has announced that it will longer offer movie and TV purchases and rentals through PlayStation Store as of August 31, 2021. The move is apparently due to a growth in PlayStation fans using subscription-based and ad-based entertainment streaming services on our consoles, instead of purchasing content to keep.
The closure of the service means that gamers can no longer purchase new movie and TV content via the PlayStation Store, but content already purchased will still be accessible for on-demand playback.
Sony’s movie and TV side of the business hasn’t exactly fared well, so this move doesn’t come as a surprise. Back in January 2020, Sony shut down it’s own streaming service, PlayStation Vue, as it wasn’t able to compete with the likes of Amazon Prime, Netflix and YouTube.
