Super Slim PS3: What a PS3 Hardware Revision Could Mean

July 6th, 2012 / Niraj Shah / News

When the “Slim” PS3 model (CECH-2000A) was announced announced at GamesCom 2009, Sony has made significant improvements in the hardware. The new model features a larger hard drive, 32% size reduction, 36% weight reduction and 34% less power consumption. What could a new hardware revision have in store?

If the changes in Firmware 4.20, which was released recently, are to go by, you can expect further changes in the hard drive and disc loading mechanisms. For one, the term “System Storage” suggests that the hard drive may be replaced with the Solid State kind or even flash storage. This means lower power consumption and better efficiency.

The renaming of “Eject” to “Remove” disc suggests that the new model may using a different disc loading mechanism – perhaps top-loading like the PSOne and PSTwo models used. Or it could use a loading tray like the original PS2 model used.

No doubt, Sony could have optimised the hardware components further, making them smaller and more efficient, meaning it can reduce the overall size of the casing and reduce its power consumption further.

The new diagram filled with the FCC suggests the new model will look like the original “Fat” PS3, but smaller – although it’s hard to tell the size from diagrams with no scale. The model could be the same size as the current “Slim” model or as small as the last PS2 model – the latter would be a great accomplishment.

Mock-up of how we think the new “Super Slim” model will compare to the other PS3 models.

No thanks. I think its time to start saving for the ps4. I can only imagine what games like uncharted and gow will look like. I would probably spring for a super cool looking uncharted console.

i’m hoping for a design close to the FAT version and glossy ! I dont think the actual slim is that elegant to look at.

Actually the PS3 is selling very well. Much more than any other console has within the past few years.

Nice link to provide evidence there….. It barely beat the 360 last year. Which is a whole year older.

A slimmer PS3 would mean less power consumption, that would be worth the purchase alone. Just please give us at least one extra USB port at the back.

I hope they make a slimmer model and they include a price cut. I really fear my fatty PS3 may die soon from YLOD (young love of donuts)

I would hope it’s at least a lil’ cheaper, everyone always goes down in $50 increments, why not knock off $25. Or maybe just start throwing in some first party games with every system, even if they are old. That’s how Nintendo has always done it.

seems accurate, but I was hoping for a mock up with the pop up disc tray.

I really could go for a new Playstation 3. I feel like my 80GB (backwards compatible) should be stored a way (I had it recently repaired, due to YLOD, but I think I should refrain from using it again).

The original PS3 was a work of art. It was beautiful and stood proudly at the center of my entertainment setup.

That “thing” looks butt-ugly and even cheaper than the current slim does. The backwards compatible Fat was a nice! The PSTwo was ugly as well. So NO THANKS Sony! Stuff it!
