PS3 Firmware 3.30 Breaking PS3s

April 24th, 2010 / Niraj Shah / News

If you haven’t updated to Firmware 3.30 yet, you may want to hold off. Problems have been reported by users after upgrading to the latest version, complaining that their PS3s have become useless. The main reported problems are that the systems no longer read any form of disc, thus making gaming and watching movies an impossibility.

One user report stated on the official PlayStation forums: “Are you kidding me! First (3.21) it freezes, and now with this one (3.30) it wont even read or recognize the disk, that means that I wont be able to play online or offline.”

Another user states: “After I installed the new FW, my Fat 40 Gig Ps3 wont read any Bluray Discs. Games, Movies but the DVD discs are working. This is just frustrating.”

Its not clear how widespread the problem current is. Some XTREME PS3 readers have managed to successfully upgrade their systems with no problems. Here are some more comments from users experiencing issues with the new update:

“After the 3.30-update I just get a black screen when I turn on my playstation!
I got no clue as to what I should do!
THANKS ALOT SONY!”

“DL’d 3.30, and Dragon Age Origins freezes after 5 minutes playing. No prior such issues. FAT 60GB model.”

“My console wont ever start anymore. The green light is now; however, a black screen appears and tell me to connect the PS controller and restart — I tried it and nothing happens. I think I have to download the firmware again through a usb stick.”

Yes I’m Affected BIG TIME> Cannot play PS3 games or BluRay. DVD’s and the Ps2 games work great, just BluRay disc. SONY PLEASE HELP

Always a risky business this updating process. All is well here though.

    Hello,

After upgading to fw 3.30 reading blu-ray disk has become very difficult, game freezes and read errors. I don´t know if my blu-ray lens is broken, it reads other formats without any problems.

    Gtz Jeff

I decided to take the plunge and update – but I first backed up all my data. Luckily, the update worked fine for me. (60GB launch model)

@mawusi I backed up my data first and upgraded with a disc still in the drive. Updated fine. Disc in drive shouldn’t make a difference.

Had same problem after update to 3.30. Screen was all black, couldn’t access safe mode. Got a different HDMI cable and installed the PS3 to a different input on the TV, and was able to see a screen asking if I wanted to install this new update that had been downloaded. Said no, and system went to the normal XMB screen. Turned everything off, re-did the original connections, and everything was fine afterwards.
