Rumor Alert: OtherOS To Be Removed In Next Firmware Update

February 20th, 2010 / Niraj Shah / News

According to a rumor on the Yellow Dog Linux Forums, Linux Product Manager Owen Stampflee has posted that the OtherOS feature will be removed in the next firmware update. The topic on the forum has since been removed, which leads us to question it’s credibility. The OtherOS feature is expected to be removed in order to block the recently discovered exploit.

According to his post over at the YellowDog Linux forums:

“Everyone,

I’ve caught a rumor from a reputable source that the next firmware update for old PS3s will remove the OtherOS feature…

I’m not sure if it’s true or not but it’s in the bset interest of the YDL community to spread the word.”

This will upset many linux users that bought the ps3 with the aim to install linux on it – though i don’t see the point of it. I think it was bad move by Sony, putting this feature in to begin with.

This will upset users if it is the case. It would make sense I guess, since Sony also decided it was a bad move and removed the feature on the newer models of PS3s. I don’t use it so Im not really bothered, although one day if I got bored enough I’m sure I’d give it a shot.
