Super Stardust 3D Details

January 13th, 2010 / Niraj Shah / News

Super Stardust 3D was show off at this years CES, along with several other PlayStation 3 titles in 3D. As we reported last week, the PlayStation 3 will be getting 3D support for games and movies later in 2010 via a firmware update. To accompany the 3D support, Sony has a lineup of existing games that will support 3D, including Super Stardust 3D. Details about the game were revealed by engine lead Seppo Halonen and creative director Harri Tikkanen in an interview with Digital Foundary.

The new version of Super Stardust HD will support 720p resolution at 120 frames per second (60fps for each eye), providing better quality graphics compared to other 3D games including Invincible Tiger and Avatar. The game produces two full-resolution 720p frames with identical content to create the 3D effect, which was “quite a challenge” for the developers.

The PS3’s cell processor has helped to provide this quality of rendering by “heavily pre-processes the data that goes to RSX to make sure it can chew through it as quickly as possible.”
