PS5’s Fan Can Be Adjusted with Firmware Updates

A new feature of the PS5 has been revealed in an interview with SIE’s VP of mechanical design Yasuhiro Ootori. Apparently, the PS5 will collect data on how each game affects the system temperature, which can then be used to update how the fan operates via Firmware updates.

Speaking with 4Gamer.net (and translated by Eurogamer), Ootori explained that they can collect information on how the PS5’s APU behaves in each game, and use that to tune how fast the fan spins to potentially stabilise system further.

Ootori said, “Various games will be released in the future, and data on the APU’s behaviour in each game will be collected. We have a plan to optimise the fan control based on this data.”

Earlier this month, Ootori presented the official PS5 teardown video, which revealed the PS5’s huge double-sided cooling fan, heatsink and liquid metal cooling system. The PS5 has been designed to run much quieter than the PS4, but Sony may choose to increase the fan speed via Firmware updates to optimise the system, sacrificing higher noise levels for better performance.
