PlayStation VR will be Priced for “Mass Market”

With just a few days to go until the big PlayStation VR event, Sony Computer Entertainment vice president Masayasu Ito has gone on record to state that the device will be “affordable” and for the “mass market”. In an interview with Polygon, Ito has re-iterated that the device will be priced like a new platform, but will be cheaper than the main competitors: Oculus Rift and HTV Vive.

The specs of PlayStation VR will be lower than Oculus Rift in order to make the device more affordable, including limiting field of view and having a lower-resolution screen.

“If you just talk about the high-end quality, yes, I would admit that Oculus may have better VR,” said PlayStation executive vice president Masayasu Ito. “However, it requires a very expensive and very fast PC. The biggest advantage for Sony is our headset works with PS4. It’s more for everyday use, so it has to be easy to use and it has to be affordable. This is not for the person who uses a high-end PC. It’s for the mass market.”

Ito noted that this is a direct order handed down from Andrew House, global CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment.

The article also reveals that PlayStation VR has more games in production than any of Sony’s other gaming accessories, including PlayStation Move and Wonderbook. In fact, Sony also see future hardware revisions of the device.

“We definitely believe [there will be a follow-up someday],” said Sony’s Richard Marks. “We’re doing everything and planning and setting it up so that we would know how to make a next one, and make that make sense for our customers and stuff, so yeah, we don’t think of this as a one-and-done by a long shot. And we also don’t think VR is like that.”
