iFixIt have opened up the PS4 to take a peek inside the box like Wired recently did, however, the component list from iFixIt reveals some surprises not previously mentioned by Sony or noticed by Wired. Along with the 8 GB of dedicated GDDR5 RAM, the PS4 also has an extra 256 MB of DDR3 RAM, suspected to be used for background processes on the secondary processor.
The extra RAM may not be much, but remember that the PS3 has just 256 MB RAM in total. The secondary CPU and extra RAM will allow background download and installing to take place, without using up the main system resources. The iFixIt teardown photos reveal the chip to be a Samsung K4B2G1646E-BCK0 2Gb DDR3 SDRAM (note: Gigabits not Gigabytes), right next to the SCEI CXD90025G Secondary/Low Power Processor.
The teardown also reveals that the power supply is rated at AC 100-240 volts, which means that it’s universal, and you can take your PS4 around the world providing you have the right adapter on the plug end.
