Rumor Alert: New PS3 Model Also Includes New Copy Protection

According to a industry source, those new CECH-3000A/B PS3 models that have been released in Japan feature more than just a reduction in weight and power consumption. They’ll also be shipping with new copy protection features built in to the hardware.

The new copy protection system will not be something on the motherboard, or in the operating system, but instead reside in the console’s Blu-ray drive itself, says the site. If the system does feature new protection measures, it will be interesting to see how Sony make it backwards compatible with older consoles.

This has been filed under the rumor category until Sony announce the protective measures officially.

In related news, a Sony UK spokesperson has told CVG: “With regards to the new CECH-3000B PS3, the information is relevant for Japan only and we have nothing to share at this time.” Expect more news in Tokyo, and if there really is new security measures in this model, expect is worldwide as soon as Sony can produce the things.
