Japan Getting DVR Kit for PlayStation 3

January 15th, 2010 / Niraj Shah / News

Sony is readying a new PS3 accessory that will let owners turn the console into a digital video recorder. The kit, dubbed “Torne”, is set to become available in Japan this March. Torne comes with a digital tuner that plugs into the PS3 via USB and the software required for viewing, browsing and recording programs. The latter comes on a Blu-ray disc and can be installed onto the PS3’s hard drive. Torne works similar to the PlayTV device that was released in Europe back in September 2008.

Users can choose to record programs onto the PS3’s hard drive. Recordings can be done even when the console is in standby mode or when you’re using the XMB’s other features. Yes, you can even record while you play a game too, though performance may be compromised.

The device can also be accessed by the PSP or PSPgo using Remote Play. Recorded content or live channels can be plays back directly over the Internet for remote viewing anywhere. The device will be priced at ¥9,980 ($110 / £68). The PlayTV device also retailed for a similar price when it was released in Europe.

What is the quality that it records in? I.e. can it record a hd channel in hd quality?

@kite The PlayTV device records in both SD (DVD quality) and HD so this should too.
