PlayStation Network bugs and problems

September 27th, 2008 / Niraj Shah / News

Over this past few days, we have notices some strange bugs on our PlayStation 3 which relate to the PlayStation Network. The network has been quite slow over the past few days with downloads taking longer than normal, but this could be due to the release of Burnout Paradise and WipEout HD. However, we have some screenshots below that show some of the bugs we’ve encountered online. These include duplicate names on the friends list, friends list visible when signed out of the network and errors when viewing profile information.

Duplicate Friends:

The below screenshot shows the user “hersi020” three times on the list, which is clearly a bug. The question is whether this a bug related to the PlayStation Firmware version or the network itself.

Online Profile Errors:

The screenshot below is a common occurrence when viewing someone’s profile information. We’ve noticed this error several times over the past month or so. The trophy information also takes far too long to load but this problem is likely to be addressed in a future firmware update.

Offline Friends List:

The strangest bug we’ve noticed so far is the ability to see your friends list when not being signed into the network. Normally, if you are logged in, the first user on the list (under the Message Box) will have a diamond on the side of the avatar indicating the current logged in user. However, when we signed out of the network, our friends list was still visible but our username had disappeared indicating that we had signed off.

When you first boot the PlayStation 3, the [Friends] menu only displays the [Message Box] option. We have not been able to replicate this problem after first encountering it. The two images below show the “before” and “after” shots. Note that the duplicate name problem is also present in both these photos.

If anyone has encountered similar problems, or anything completely different, post it below in the comments section. We are curious to know how many bugs exist and how widespread the problem is.

I haven’t had any of those problems. But when I message someone it shows up on everyone on my friends list that I have received a message from them and I haven’t and it can become very confusing.

4 some reason, everytime I get 2 or more msg’s from my friends at about the same time, only 1 is viewable. I have 2 quickly delete 1 of them in order 4 incoming msg’s to b seen. 1 friend can send me a msg, then it indicates 2 other friends have sent me a msg, and when I check the original sender of the msg, I delete it then check the other 2 friends’ msg’s and it says there r no msg’s. Weird huh? that’s what I go through everyday. It’s been this way since the last update.

the online profile problem only happens when the avatar icon hasnt already loaded, so just wait for their icon to appear and then you can see their profile, but i do agree, they need to fix that, my problem is that sometimes a new friend that was added has the same profile layout as a “player met online” including the button to add as a friend (even though they are one)

and they really need to speed up trophies, they are extremely slow

i know of the following two, and how and why they happen..

loading the psn card takes a while because it downloads all the earned (or only the last 8-10) trophy images every time you request a psn card.. so its also very bandwidth hungry…

Online Profile Errors happens when it tries to request user information.. but doesn’t for some reason, either the digest password is wrong (rarely but happens) or it can’t find the server… retry will most likely help..

The trophy information takes way too long for myself also, it takes 17-20 seconds before my trophy info appears.

I also expierenced the second problem… The way to pass by this error is to wait for the profile picture to load. When that image is loaded there won’t be any problem any more

I had had those two problems plus two and three icons of BD. Instead of names, are games or BD.

I’m either getting messages days (sometimes weeks ) to late or not at all. When I get replies to my messages it also shows up as message received for half the people on my list ! Sometimes the messages also won´t let me delete them ! It´s drivin´ me bonkers ! Ever since Update 2.0 I´ve found that if it´s not 1 problem it´s another with the PSN !!!

lol…….me 2 Pookah. I’m having that same problem. I posted a similar comment but your sounds more understanding, only this messaging problem started with me ever since FW 2.43. I thought I was the only 1.

I have the same problem as chicago8506 and Gazo, my message box only displays the last message sent or received. Even if i write a message, it appears in my received box. What kind of PS3 do you guys have? Mine is a 60gb

Nope haven’t had any of that happen to me but I just singed signed in today and my friends list was gone, like I am still on their friends list but mine has disappeared, I hate it cause it makes it difficult for me to play a club game on NHL 09 cause I don’t know if any1 is on
