Games preservation group DoesItPlay is planning an “economic and gameplay blackout” for the week of 23rd August 2026. Dubbed “PSBlackout,” the boycott is asking players to refrain from logging into the PlayStation Network, not to play games or purchase any games or content from the PlayStation Store.
The post on X calls for players to power down their Sony consoles for the week, with “No logins, no play sessions, no purchases on any of Sony’s platforms.” The reason for the blackout is over Sony’s decision to end physical games from 2028.
Many have taken to social media platforms to criticise the move to all-digital. There’s even a petition called “Don’t Kill the Disc” that has racked up nearly 360,000 signatures as of writing. But, the boycott will likely have little to no effect unless a substantial number of players observe it. Hopefully, even a small impact may give Sony pause for thought and consider a U-turn.
