In order to avoid another price increase for the PS5, a rather odd strategy has been adopted by Sony. According to certification documents, the new PS5 Slim Digital Edition (CFI-2100) model will downgrade the internal storage, but cost the same.
As a reminder, the PS5 Digital Edition launched at €399 / £359.99 / $399 in 2020, before increasing to €449 / £389.99 in September 2022. Another price increase followed in April 2025, increasing the cost to €499 / £429.99 / $499.99. An increase of €100 / £70 / $100 in less than five years.
The launch PS5 Slim Digital Edition came with a 1 TB hard drive, but the new CFI-2100 model will instead have a smaller 825 GB hard drive. The new version is currently slated for Europe and UK release. The packaging will feature a “825 GB” label to help differentiate the model. The updated model is apparently launching from 13th September 2025.
A new PS5 Slim with Disc Drive will also be releasing at a later date. The revised disc-drive model will thankfully keep the existing 1 TB hard drive. Now might be a good time to pick up the current model before stock is replaced with the newer one.
