New PlayStation Portal System Software Update Releasing Today

June 19th, 2024 / Niraj Shah / News

The PlayStation Portal rarely receives software updates, but a new one is coming out later today. This update includes a major improvement: support for public Wi-Fi networks, including those requiring additional validation steps.

With this new system software update, PS Portal will let you connect to a range of public Wi-Fi networks that may require additional validation steps. This includes Wi-Fi networks with sign-in screens that can often be found in hotels, cafes, and airports.

Interestingly, rather than provide a browser on the PS Portal, the PS Portal will instead display a QR code. The QR code needs to be scanned by your smartphone or tablet. Once scanned, you’ll be able to use your mobile device’s web browser to complete the additional validation steps. This is a important move, as previously, the browser has been used to hack previous PlayStation consoles.

This update also improves the PlayStation Portal’s touch screen by adding visual feedback. The emulated touch pad now displays new effects to indicate registered inputs.

Finally, the update adds a new setting to the portable console, allowing you to display the remaining battery level percentage on the status bar at the top right corner of your screen. To use this feature, open the quick menu, go to [Settings] > [System] > [Battery], and then turn on [Show Battery Percentage].

At time of writing, the PlayStation Portal system software update was not yet ready to download.
