Sony Shipped 7.8 Million PS5s, Beating PS4 Launch Stats

Sony has revealed that 7.8 million PS5s have shipped as of 31st March 2021, making it one of the best PlayStation launches in history. Sony is quickly selling every console it manages to produce and ship, and so far, the PS5 is tracking ahead of the PS4’s launch stats.

A total of 4.5 million PS5 consoles were sold by the end of 2020, with another 3.3 million console shipped in the first quarter of 2021. The total of 7.8 million PS5 units is just ahead of the PS4’s 7.6 million units sold during the first two quarters.

The PS5 continues to remain in short supply and selling out moments after new stock is released in stores and online (and hopefully no longer being bought by scalpers). It’s unclear how the PS5 sales compare to the Xbox Series X|S, but it’s probably fair to say that the PS5 is leading at the moment.

Sony is planning to sell over 14.8 million consoles in the current financial year, but production bottlenecks could affect production of the consoles, the main issue being a shortage in chips.
