Next-Gen VR System Coming to PS5, But Not This Year

Sony has today announced the first details of the next-generation of Virtual Reality, which is heading to the PS5. The next-gen version of PlayStation VR promises to enhance the virtual experience with dramatic leaps in performance and interactivity.

The next-gen VR system will enhance everything from resolution and field of view to tracking and input, according to Sony. It will connect to PS5 with a single cord (presumably via the USB-C port, but could be a regular USB port) to simplify setup and improve ease-of-use, while enabling a high-fidelity visual experience.

A new VR controller is also in the works, that will will incorporate some of the key features found in the DualSense wireless controller.

There’s still a lot of development underway for the new VR system, so it won’t be launching in 2021. And Sony hasn’t revealed the designs of either the new headset or the new VR controller.

The early announcement is a nice heads-up to gamers, but it does leave a few questions unanswered. For example, will existing PS4 VR titles be backwards compatible with this new headset? Hopefully we learn more about the future of VR on the PS5 in the coming months.
