Sony Cuts Initial PS5 Production by 4 Million Units According to Report

According a report from Bloomberg, Sony is scaling back the production of the PS5 due to manufacturing issues related to the console’s custom system-on-chip (SoC). Sony’s ambition was to produce 15 million PS5 units by the end of the financial year to March 2021, but this has now been scaled back.

Sony is now targeting 11 million consoles in the same timeframe – a reduction of 4 million units. If the news is accurate, it could have an impact on the component’s cost and affect profit margins, which could then affect the PS5’s price.

The news means that there will be fewer consoles at launch to purchase, and the shortages could affect supplies well into 2021. Sony is expected to announce the PS5’s pricing and release date at a live broadcast tomorrow.
