Next-Gen PlayStation Specs Officially Revealed

An interview with Sony lead architect Mark Cerny has revealed some of the technical specification of the next-generation PlayStation console. Although the name of the console has not been revealed, we’ll refer to it as the PS5 for now.

Cerny revealed to Wired that the upcoming PlayStation console will use AMD’s CPU and GPU technology, which includes a 8-core third-gen AMD Ryzen CPU and a custom variant of the Radeon Navi GPU.

Cerny also revealed that the console will include a solid-state hard drive (SSD) to make loading games much faster. The PS5 demo unit was able to cut Marvel’s Spider-Man’s loading times from 15 second to 0.8 second. Incidentally, this also confirms that the console will be backwards compatible.

PS5 Tech Specs

What we don’t know about the upcoming console is whether Sony will finally include a 4K Blu-ray drive, thich the PS4 Pro oddly didn’t include. Other outstanding questions are around PlayStation VR, and when the console is likely to be released. But don’t expect it to be released in 2019.
