Sony Announces Project Morpheus – The VR Headset for the PS4

At GDC 2014, Sony announced Project Morpheus, a prototype virtual reality (VR) system that works with PS4, and the next innovation that will change the future of games. The VR device is still a prototype at this point, but the current model of Project Morpheus features a head-mounted display with 1080p resolution and new 3D audio technology that re-creates stereoscopic sounds in all directions and changes in real-time depending on your head orientation.

The headset is capable of tracking the user’s head movements and orientation shifts thanks to a built-in accelerometer, gyroscope and connectivity with PlayStation Camera. So as your head rotates, the image of the virtual world rotates intuitively in real-time.

Project Morpheus also works with the DualShock 4 Wireless Controller and PlayStation Move to deliver an easy-to-use, plug-and-play VR experience.

“The prototype for Project Morpheus is the culmination of our work over the last 3+ years as we’ve refined our vision for VR,” said Shu Yoshida, president of SCE Worldwide Studios, on the PlayStation.Blog. As of yet, no release date or pricing information has been revealed.
