Sony Reveals More PS4 Details at GDC

Sony revealed more details about the PS4 and the accompanying peripherals that come with the console. Sony revealed a number of specific details about the new DualShock 4 controller as well as revealing the specification of the new camera bar. We break down the information for you below. With each new reveal from Sony, we can’t help but get a little bit more excited about the PS4.

DualShock 4 Controller:

Sony revealed that the DualShock 4’s touchpad has a very high resolution of 1920×900 –  the number of individual points on the panel that can sense touch – making the touchpad extremely sensitive and precise.

As previously mentioned, the lightbar on the controller is primarily going to be used to identify the players: blue, red, green and pink like the face button symbols. However, the lightbar may also be used for other things like flashing when you shoot your gun in a game, or change its brightness depending on how much health you have left.

The built-in speakers will be capable of outputting 32Khz sound if up to two controllers are used, and will drop to 16Khz if there’s three or more. While not the best quality (less than CD quality), it will be enough for sound effects and audio clues when playing games.

Camera Bar

The camera bar will feature two 1280×800 resolution cameras at 12 bits per pixel and 60Hz refresh rate, which is basically two 1 megapixel cameras. The camera quality will be better than the old PlayStation Eye, but it won’t take photos that great. Most smartphones have more than 5 times the resolution. The camera bar will be used for things like video chat, speech recognition and killcam shots of the player.
