PS4 to Offer First 4K Movie Download Service

The PS4 is set to be the front-runner in 4K technology, with the console being able to support 4K videos and photos. According to The Verge, Sony will be releasing a 4K video download service alongside the PS4, becoming the first service to offer downloadable 4K content. However, initial content downloads will exceed 100 GB.

The 4K format, also known as Ultra-HD, carries a resolution of 3,840 x 2,160 pixels.

The sheer size of the files will mean some consumers will struggle to download content without exceeding their monthly bandwidth limit, and put a strain on ISPs. The background downloading option on the PS4 should help the situation, but it will depend on the consumers Internet infrastructure.

Sony Electronics President and COO Phil Molyneux said that typical 4K movies would be “100 gigabytes and plus” depending on length, and added that file size and average broadband speeds are “challenges that we have to work through… we’ve got some very good ideas that will make that a comfortable consumer experience.”
