Sales of the PlayStation 3 edges closer to the Xbox 360. A spokesperson has confirmed to IGN that Sony sold has sold 35.7 million units worldwide as of March 2010. The 2009 fiscal results from Sony also revealed that 13 million PS3 consoles were sold for the year. In comparison, the Xbox 360 has sold 40.2 million units world wide narrowing the gap to just 4.5 million units.
The Xbox 360 sold 10 million units in the last year, 3 million less than the PlayStation 3. Over the years, sales of the PS3 are increasing steadily, as evident by the lifetime numbers shown below:

2007 – 9.1 million
2008 – 10.1 million
2009 – 13.0 million
Total – 35.7 million
