Firmware History Which M.2 SSDs Can be Used with the PS5?
Sony has released the initial specification of the M.2 SSD that are compatible with the PS5. Although Sony hasn’t released a list of officially supported drives, it has provided information on the supported specification, including physical size and capacity so you can narrow down your options. The PS5 will support up to 4TB M.2 SSDs with minimum of 5,500MB/s sequential read speed. Sony also recommends that a heatsink is used to help with heat dissipation, supporting both single-sided or double-sided formats. The total height of the M.2 SSD module (including heatsink) must be less than 11.25mm (0.442in). Sony can’t guarantee that every M.2 SSD that matches the below specification will work with the PS5, so you should double check with the manufacturer. The below specification is subject to change as the expansion slot is tested in the latest PS5 firmware beta. PS5 M.2 SSD SpecificationInterface: PCIe Gen4 x4 M.2 NVMe SSD Capacity: 250GB – 4TB Cooling structure: Using an M.2 SSD with your PS5 console requires effective heat dissipation with a cooling structure, such as a heatsink. You can attach one to your M.2 SSD yourself, either in a single-sided format, or double-sided format. There are also M.2 SSDs that have cooling structures (such as heatsinks) built in. Sequential read speed: 5,500MB/s or faster is recommended Module width: 22mm width (25mm width is not supported) Form Factor: M.2 type 2230, 2242, 2260, 2280 and 22110.
