Speaking to CVG following the announcement of PlayStation Now, SCEA’s marketing VP John Koller has revealed that the streaming service won’t give users access to games they already own on disc for free. When asked if the PS4 would detect PS3 games in the drive and unlock it via streaming, Koller responded with “We… uh, initially, no. So, we’re saying no to that right now.”
When asked if the feature was being investigated, or even possible, Koller responded with “Right now, no.” Hopefully Sony will allow physically own games to be played by PlayStation Now in the future, but its unlikely to be a feature when the service launches this Summer.
Koller didn’t mention if the same was true for games purchased via the PlayStation Store, so it could be possible that PlayStation Now will allow gamers to play PS3 games purchased from the PlayStation Store on the PS4 and PS Vita.
Koller couldn’t confirm if the PlayStation Now subscription would be part of PlayStation Plus or a separate fee either. “We don’t know. The rental and subscription options are the only things we’ve talked about today. There’s some work that needs to be done on this. That’s why we’re saying Summer,” said Koller.
It’s a possibility that PlayStation Plus subscribers will get a discount to the service, or even a free streaming title every month as part of the Instant Game Collection. Once again, Sony “haven’t made a decision yet,” says Koller.
