On September 9th 2010, the PlayStation celebrated its 15th anniversary in North America. Earlier this year, Sony asked 3,000 Nort American PlayStation users what PlayStation means to them. The results of the survey can be found in the infographic below.
Yesterday, PlayStation celebrated its 15th anniversary in North America. Fifteen years ago, the original PlayStation console was introduced, forever altering the entertainment experience for our loyal PlayStation fans and revolutionizing the video game industry.
If you are waiting for the next generation PlayStation console, you have a few years of waiting to do if Sony Worldwide Studios boss, Shuhei Yoshida, is to be believed. In an interview with Develop, Yoshida said that Microsoft and Nintendo will release their next consoles before Sony.
Sony has patented a game demo technology that would initially provide players with a full version of a game, but as time progresses, the game would start to degrade or deteriorate leaving players with the bare bones of the game. The full version could then be restored via an unlock code.
The PlayStation University has discovered that the memory used by the PS3′s operating system has reduced from 120MB to 50MB. This upgrade that Sony implemented via the firmware updates means that an additional 70MB worth of memory has been freed up for developers to utilise.
Today marks 15 years since the PlayStation was first launched in Japan. Although the west didn’t get the hardware until almost a year later, today is the system’s actual birthday. The PlayStation (and PSOne) was the first console to reach the 100 million sales mark, achieving a total of 102.49 million units on March 31, 2005. Sony ceased production of the PlayStation on March 23, 2006, over 11 years after it was first produced.
As of April 17th 2009, Europe will have its own dedicated PlayStation Blog, similar to the US version. Gamers in Europe have been requesting a dedicated blog for the European market ever since the US PlayStation Blog went live, and finally our prayers have been answered. The current semi-official blog for Europe, ThreeSpeech, will be shutting down as a result but the team will continue to blog on the new European PlayStation Blog. ThreeSpeech will be posting a further update within the next few days.
